Double Tap Gesture Features Arrives in Latest Apple Watches with watchOS 10.1

Double Tap Gesture

Apple Watch Double Tap Gesture

Apple has recently released an exciting update for its Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the introduction of the innovative ‘double tap gesture.’ This new feature allows users to interact with their watches effortlessly and conveniently using a simple hand movement.

The double tap gesture enables users to perform various common actions without having to touch the watch’s display. With this feature, users can now:

1. Open the Smart Stack from any watch face.
2. Answer and end phone calls.
3. Manage messages and notifications.
4. Control timers and stopwatches.
5. Snooze alarms.
6. Manage music and media playback.
7. Utilize the Elevation view in the Compass app.
8. Operate the Camera Remote in the Camera app.
9. Manage workout reminders and notifications.

This remarkable functionality is made possible by the S9 SiP (System in Package) and the 4-core Neural Engine. The S9 SiP is 25% more power-efficient than its predecessor, while the new 4-core Neural Engine performs machine learning tasks twice as fast. These advancements allow the watch to recognize subtle wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the user performs a double tap.

Apple Watches

The double tap gesture is available whenever the watch’s display is awake and does not significantly impact battery life. Whether you own an Apple Watch Series 9 or an Apple Watch Ultra 2, you can enjoy this feature all day long.

Customization Options for Double Tap

While the double tap gesture automatically selects primary actions for most apps and notifications, users have the option to choose a different function in two specific cases: advancing through widgets in the Smart Stack and controlling media playback during active sessions.

Availability

The Double Tap Gesture is now available by default on Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 10.1.

Please note that watchOS 10.1 is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and later models and requires an iPhone XS or a newer model running iOS 17.
