WhatsApp Nearby Contacts
WhatsApp is set to revolutionize the way users share files with nearby contacts with its latest feature in development, as reported by WABetaInfo. The new file-sharing capability will soon be available for beta testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.20 or later.
The nearby contacts feature will allow users to effortlessly share files by simply shaking their devices, after both parties open a specific section. This will generate a secure share request, ensuring a controlled exchange. Importantly, the entire sharing process will be end-to-end encrypted, guaranteeing the utmost security and privacy. In a bid to further enhance privacy, phone numbers will be concealed, enabling users to comfortably share files with individuals not on their contact list.
This heightened security measure will extend the protection of file exchanges beyond standard WhatsApp chats and into unfamiliar network environments. While the file-sharing feature is currently in development, its official inclusion in a future app update is anticipated.
As this exciting development unfolds, questions remain about potential restrictions on file size, type, or quantity. Moreover, the timeline for the feature’s introduction to the stable version of the app remains uncertain. More details are expected to emerge once the feature is officially rolled out.
In a related development, Google recently announced at CES 2024 that Nearby Share has been rebranded as Quick Share. This move signals a collaboration with Samsung to create a unified cross-Android solution under Quick Share, combining both solutions for enhanced user experience.
